The How and Why of Flower Essences and Ceremony

Flower Essences are powerful medicines that are especially helpful in bringing balance to our emotions. Most of us experience a wide range of emotions on a daily basis, with some of them perhaps being harmful or debilitating for us. Anxiety, depression, worry and fear are common ones that can really take away from one’s quality of life.

I began using Flower Essences for my anxiety. I later healed my anxiety naturally, but this was my first step in restoring balance to my emotional body. Red Chestnut was an essence that resonated deeply within me. The description for Red Chestnut is:

“For those who find it difficult not to be anxious for other people. Often they have ceased to worry about themselves, but for those of.” – Dr. Edward Bach

This incredible remedy alleviated my anxiety significantly after just one use. I began using it intuitively each day with great results. Around the same time, I had just begun to make my own flower essences as well. They are very easy to make and also very empowering. At the time, I lived in a home that had an abundance of Tiger Lily growing in the yard. Most herbalists believe that the plants that grow abundantly around you are ones that you probably need. I definitely felt this energetic attraction and began to make a Tiger Lily flower essence. After making it, I looked up the properties of Tiger Lily and found that it was helpful in balancing the masculine and feminine aspects of ourselves – something that was perfect for me at that time.

In many of my Goddess Retreats, I incorporate this incredible plant medicine. It is not uncommon for me to include a few drops of these essences at a local ceremony or circle. At my Goddess Retreats, I often teach how to make Flower Essences, though, and we spend a lot of time in nature with the plants. I believe that a deep connection to the earth is necessary to walk the path of the Goddess and Sacred Feminine. Honoring Mother Earth is incredibly powerful, and this is one of my favorite ways to honor Her.

How to make a Flower Essence:

What you’ll need

-1 clean glass bowl

-1 glass jar

-a plant of choice

-brandy or vodka

-a strainer

-scissors

-tincture bottles

Take your glass bowl and fill with water, preferably fresh spring water. Find your plant of choice growing in nature and ask the plant if you may use its essence for plant medicine. They almost always say yes! Trim the plant just below the head of the flower so that the flower drops into your bowl of water. You may bless this water or just say your intentions for this essence out loud. Set the bowl in a sunny area of your yard for 3-6 hours. When you return, strain the liquid into a glass jar. Fill a tincture bottle approximately 50-75% full with your flower essence and top it off with Vodka or Brandy until it is full. The alcohol preserves your essence so it does not go bad. Enjoy and use daily! Lasts 6-12 months, depending on how much alcohol used.

It’s that easy? Yes! Plant medicine is powerful! May this bring you closer to your highest self!
