Many of us likely go to yoga a few times a week and find that it adds a variety of benefits to our lives. In the past I've usually committed to going to a yoga class 4 or 5 days a week but recently wanted to commit to going every day for a week.
I'm excited to share with you what I found changed for me by going to yoga everyday for a week!
I chose to go to yoga daily for a week for a number of reasons. Among them: I am working on building arm strength, I have been noticing huge advancements in flexibility since going to yoga more regularly and I have also found a yoga studio in Salt Lake City that I LOVE.) For these reasons, I decided to commit to the practice and see what shifted for me.
The concept of going to yoga 6+ days a week is not an uncommon one. Within the traditional practice of Ashtanga Yoga, students are encouraged to practice 6 days a week religiously.
While I'm not practicing Ashtanga, I knew this would be a powerful experiment for me.
During my 7 days, I went to a local studio 6 of the 7 days and on the final day, I did my own personal home practice. During my 6 days at the studio, I switched up the classes to allow my body to rejuvenate and rest as needed. I didn't go to a hard core active vinyasa class everyday and instead opted for more relaxing and yin styled classes when I felt fatigued or sore.
And what did I learn practicing yoga everyday for a week?
I learned that my body is capable of amazing things in just a week!
Within a week of consistent yoga practice, I gained a significant amount of flexibility, saw massive improvements in my arm strength (especially evident in chaturanga) and I found a sense of peace and balance that absolutely amazed me. And this all happened within a week.
Seeing change happen so quickly and effectively has inspired me to practice yoga everyday. I don't go to my local studio everyday but on the days I don't, I implement my own home practice. Because I have seen so many positive shifts from this experience, I'll be doing yoga everyday.
It's important to remember that your body knows best. Sometimes my home practice is 20 minutes of pigeon pose and frog pose. And that's okay. You don't need to rock out a 60 minute sweaty yoga practice if you're not feeling it. Learn to trust what you need and be okay with it.
