4 Ways I Offer Myself Self Care and Love

Over the years I have learned that making myself a priority and offering myself plenty of self care allows me to support others and be a better friend, mentor, teacher, woman and human being.

However, I was not always this way.

There was a time in my life when I neglected to care for myself and because of that, I often felt drained, overwhelmed and depressed.

I have made these 4 things a part of my regular life because they bring me joy and are reminders to myself that I appreciate and support who I am and the path that I am on.

Here are 4 Ways that I Offer Myself Self Care and Love

1. I buy myself flowers once a week

Cliche? Perhaps! But I love having a bouquet of flowers on my kitchen table. Once a week I try my best to go to the store and buy a bouquet of colorful assorted flowers. This simple act reminds me of a quote that is very dear to me. It reads:

After a while you learn the subtle difference

Between holding a hand and chaining a soul,

And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning

And company doesn’t mean security,

And you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts

And presents aren’t promises,

And you begin to accept your defeats

With your head up and your eyes open

With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child,

And you learn to build all your roads on today,

Because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans,

And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.

After a while you learn

That even sunshine burns if you get too much.

So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul,

Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.

And you learn that you really can endure...

That you really are strong,

And you really do have worth.

And you learn and learn...

With every goodbye you learn.

I choose to buy myself flowers because this simple act allows me to feel joy and gratitude in ordinary moments of life.

2. I make space for what I need each day

There are some days when I crave activity and excitement and other days I desire rest and relaxation. On days when my energy feels high and I have a lot of motivation, I'll write up a dozen blog posts or go for a hike in the mountains. On days when I need rest, I'll curl up on the couch and watch a movie or stretch for an hour.

By tuning into my body each day, I am able to check in and see what I need. Making this connection to myself a priority allows me to avoid feeling overextended or out of balance and instead I am able to flow through life connected to my needs and desires.

3. I go on a walk almost everyday

The simple act of going on a walk has become a routine that I look forward to everyday! To simply be present with my thoughts and breath connects me to a deep part of myself that I find I can only access while walking.

6 out of 7 days a week I will carve out 30 to 60 minutes to go for a walk in nature. Some days I feel called to hike straight up a mountain and other days I like to walk a bit slower through a beautiful neighborhood with blooming trees. Walking has become a moving meditation for me and gives me a sense of peace and gratitude that radiates from me the rest of the day.

4. I connect to the Universe each day A huge part of my daily life is connecting to Source, or the Universe. By saying thank you each morning as I wake up, I affirm my gratitude to be alive and well and on this beautiful journey. I try to connect to Source throughout my day whenever needed if I feel imbalanced, angry or upset about something. As I come back to the Universe, I am able to see the greater picture and focus far less on the small details of life.

For me personally, the act of connecting to the Divine is very special and one of the greatest forms of self care I know. This is a large part of my healing journey.

Those are the 4 self care practices I offer myself regularly! How do those things feel in your body?
