Menstrual Blood Face Masks are Life Changing - Here's Why

Updated: Dec 8, 2019

I’ve wanted to write this blog post for a long time and so i’m deeply excited and grateful to write upon the wisdom of menstrual blood. At our Sacred Goddess Retreats, we teach about the wisdom of the feminine, how women cycle with the moon phases, how to track ovulation patterns and also the wisdom of our menstrual cycles. While many of us grew up feeling hindered or limited by our menstrual cycles, this is actually the most sacred time of our month.

A few months ago I wrote a blog post about powerful uses for menstrual blood and this sparked a lot of excitement for women around the world. From offering your blood to the earth to fertilizing plants with this sacred blood, the feedback I received was that of excitement and connection.

I'm grateful to share about the wisdom of moon blood masks aka painting your face with menstrual blood. Along the way I'll share my story as to why I began this practice, how it's transformed my skin health and why it's something I do every single month.

-Sacred Links-

While in our modern world menstrual blood is often thought of as dirty, unclean or a waste product, these beliefs are far from the true nature of menstruation. For thousands of years, cultures around the world revered menstruation as a deeply sacred and powerful time. Menstrual blood was often offered to the earth and rubbed on the body to promote healing.

So why am I so passionate about menstrual blood? Let me share how menstrual blood has healed my skin and the story that has unfolded over the last few years. And let me preface that had this not happened to me personally, I probably wouldn't have believed it.

Growing up, I developed severe eczema on my hands that often looked like distinct purple gloves. My hands were raw and would crack and bleed, especially in the winter. Often my school papers would have blood on them from my hands cracking open randomly at school.

In high school, my eczema spread to my face around my nose and cheeks. Not only was this mortifying for a young woman in high school, but it was also really painful and raw. No matter how much makeup I put on, it seemed that nothing could hide the raw peeling skin on my face.

After multiple doctor visits and next to zero answers, I decided to take it into my own hands at the age of 19. I chose to remove wheat from my diet and within two weeks, my eczema was about 80% healed. My eczema on my hands completed disappeared and most of the patches on my face disappeared too. There was one small patch on my face however that remained.

I'll be sharing a blog post next week about my full story about eczema and how menstrual blood specifically healed the eczema patches on my face so stay tuned for that!

Fast forward a few years and lots of natural creams and lotions later, my eczema was still present on my face. After attending a retreat with a group of women in Oregon who advocated using menstrual blood on your face, I decided I had nothing to lose.

While I was certainly hesitant at first, I decided to give it a try.

So, I removed my menstrual cup and began to paint my face with this rich red blood.

While it was somewhat shocking to look in the mirror at first, I committed to the experiment and left it on for about 30 minutes.

After I washed the blood off with warm water, I was amazed. First, my face was glowing like never before. While most face masks left my face irritated or really dry, my face was moisturized and glowing and my fine lines were completely gone. I felt like a new person.

I wasn't prepared though for the next big change that I would experience...

Within two days, my eczema patches on my face that I had had for almost a decade... were completely gone. Dozens of organic creams and oils and lotions had done nothing to heal this eczema and one moon blood mask had suddenly healed it.

A few years later now, I'm grateful to report that my eczema is still completely healed.

As I said, if this hadn't happened to me personally, I'm not sure I would have believed it. Enjoying a moon blood face mask every month has been absolutely life changing for my skin health and my journey in completely accepting and honoring my menstrual cycle.

- Why Menstrual Blood Face Masks are Powerful -

Menstrual blood is powerful for a number of reasons.

One - Menstrual blood is full of stem cells. Remember that what your body releases every month had the possibility of growing another human being. Contrary to popular belief, menstrual blood is not a waste product equivalent to feces. This rich substance had the capacity to create life.

Two - Menstrual blood has over 50 times more calcium than regular blood in the body. Menstrual blood is rich in most minerals and has the potential to be incredibly nourishing to the skin.

Three - Offering your blood on your skin is likely a far better option than ingesting it (Note: I DO NOT recommend ingesting menstrual blood like some blogs encourage) because your skin creates a natural barrier. Your skin will absorb what it needs and have a natural barrier to the things it does not need to absorb.

If this wisdom resonates with you, you may want to give it a try! If it doesn't, that's okay too! We are all on our own independent journeys and what works for some will not necessarily work for others.

Note: Personally, I would not do a moon blood mask if you are using birth control as your blood may contain high levels of hormones. Use at your own discretion.

If you have debilitating menstrual cramps or other symptoms that make it difficult to enjoy your cycle, see our blog post here about naturally relieving menstrual cramps. You can also set up a Naturopathic appointment with Cassandra to support you in a 1:1 space.
