Essential Oils to Use During Yoga Classes

Whether you are teaching a yoga class or wanting to incorporate essential oils into your home practice, I'm excited to share with you my favorite go-to essential oils to use during yoga.

Essential oils are essentially the plant blood or vitality of a plant. Essential oils are highly concentrated and it can take hundreds of pounds of raw material to make one small bottle of essential oils. This is why essential oils are on the expensive side and why a very small amount goes a long way!

One drop is truly all you need with an essential oil so you don't need to put 5 or 10 drops on your hand to feel relaxed. Less is more sometimes and with essential oils, that is certainly true.

Essential Oils to Use During Yoga ~

1. Lavender

Lavender is probably the most popular essential oil used during yoga and for good reason! This is one of the best scents to relax, ground and unwind. This is a great oil to smell at the end of your yoga class before savasana or if you are doing a restorative / yin yoga class, this could be an oil that you smell throughout the class. I like to put lavender on my wrists or on my temples. '

2. Cypress

Cypress is an amazing tree essential oil that will leave you feeling grounded, rested and centered. Cypress smells similar to spruce and balsam fir but there's something about cypress that I especially love. I like to put a drop on the bottom of my feet before starting a yoga class to center me and prepare me to flow.

3. Frankincense

This is generally my go-to oil for all things but especially during yoga. Frankincense can be applied to the third eye (the space between the eyebrows) or on the temples. This sacred oil has been used for thousands of years to support spiritual health and awakening. The scent is also very grounding and calming, making it a great oil before savasana.

4. Grapefruit

Grapefruit is a potent, delicious smelling essential oil that is energizing and activating. This is a great essential oil to smell before an active yoga class where you'll need a lot of energy.

5. Eucalyptus

This is a great essential oil to use during the winter to help support the breath and awaken the body. This is a powerful essential oil to inhale before beginning your yoga practice to support empowerment and awakening.

I personally recommend the brand Ameo Essential Oils. I do not recommend using essential oils that are cheap or sold at places like Walgreens. These oils are diluted and contain other filler ingredients. G essential oils are an investment so know that you get what you pay for with essential oils! For example a good 15ml bottle of frankincense should be $60 - $90 and I've seen it at the grocery store for $9.99. I would not recommend purchasing the cheap version.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please be sure to check with your physician or naturopath to ensure it's safe for you to use these essential oils.
