How to Celebrate the Spring Equinox ~ Ostara

The Spring Equinox, or Ostara, is such a magical time of the year. Life is returning to the earth and our eyes fill with wonder as we watch this new life creep out from under the cool dirt. The sun is getting warmer. The days are getting longer. Abundance is coming.

Spring marks the maiden to mother transition, from budding to full. It is also a time of cleansing and growth. These are powerful energies to work with this time of year! Ostara invites us to come out from our inward winter selves and to step outward and into the light.

You can create a ceremony or ritual by yourself to celebrate this sacred time of the year!

What you’ll need:

-A sacred and quiet place for your ceremony

-1 flower pot

-Flower seeds of choice

-4 green candles

-2 purple candles

-A journal and pen

Your Ceremony:

Set up your 4 candles at the altar to represent the 4 directions (North, East, South, West) and the 2 purple candles to represent the God and Goddess. Spring is very much a time of balance and so balancing masculine and feminine energies is important. Open the circle by calling in the directions and then by chanting OM.

Grab a flower pot and some seeds and your journal and begin to set your intentions for the next few months. Do you have any goals? Is there anything in your life that you would like to see flourish? (new job, business, home renovations etc.) Write as many as you can think of out in journal and try to imagine yourself with each of those goals completed. How do you feel?

Next, hold the seeds in your hands and bless them with all of the love that you have. Ask them to grow and be strong and to follow the light. Bless these seeds with the intentions you wrote in your journal and ask them to magnify your sacred intentions. You can then plant them in the pot. I like to draw symbols on the flower pot (tree of life, heart etc.) to also help with my sacred intention.

Set the flower pots in a window sill and then celebrate!

You could dance, chant, sing or enjoy a delicious feast! If you are with friends I like to ask everyone to bring a small dish to share so that we can all feast and enjoy the bounty around us. Feasting is an incredible way to show gratitude for our blessings!

There are many ways you could alter this sacred ceremony. Make it truly yours!

The painting of eggs (similar to what we do at modern Easter) was once a sacred part of Ostara as we painted eggs to honor the sacred lives of our ancestors and then gave them as gifts. This is still a beautiful way to honor the return of life and to honor past lives.

You could also do the ceremony outside and plant directly into the earth at a community garden. Or, you could plant a tree with each Spring Equinox.

You can also make room for what you would like to release or cleanse and make an intention to shed that there that evening. Cleansing your home and donating the clutter in your life will also help manifest this!

Do not skim over this holy day! Make time for yourself to honor the seasons and the changing and awakening earth.

I would love to hear how your ceremony goes! Comment below and let us know your favorite ways to honor the Spring Equinox!

With gratitude, Cassandra Wilder
